He preached the <a title=\"Gospel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gospel\">gospel<\/a> and administered baptism to many of the native Hindu <a title=\"Brahmin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brahmin\">Brahmin<\/a> families and appointed priests for them. As per historians it was from the four main families that St Thomas appointed priests for Malankara.They were Kalli, Kaliyankal, Sangarapuri and Pakalomattom.In order to have a further understanding in this regard Mylakkattu family was among the first in kerala to involve in the genome mapping projects.The ancestors of Mylakkattu family are from Pakalomattom. From there he is said to have preached the gospel throughout the Malabar coast. The various churches he founded were located mainly on the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Periyar River\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Periyar_River\">Periyar River<\/a> and its tributaries and along the coast, where there were Jewish colonies.In accordance with apostolic custom, Thomas ordained teachers and leaders or elders, who were reported to be the earliest ministry of the Malabar Church.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Malabar_Church_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mylakkattufamily.org.in\/Mylakkattu_Family\/#cite_note-Malabar_Church-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>He is believed to have established <i>Ezharappallikal<\/i> or <i><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Seven and Half Churches\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seven_and_Half_Churches\">Seven and Half Churches<\/a><\/i> in Kerala. Thomas evangelized this area and then crossed to the <a title=\"Coromandel Coast\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coromandel_Coast\">Coromandel Coast<\/a> of southeast India where after carrying out a second mission he died in <a title=\"Chennai\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chennai\">Chennai<\/a>. Throughout the period under review the church in India was under the jurisdiction of <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Edessa, Mesopotamia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edessa,_Mesopotamia\">Edessa<\/a> which was then under the Mesopotamian patriarchate at <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Seleucia-Ctesiphon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seleucia-Ctesiphon\">Seleucia-Ctesiphon<\/a> and later at Baghdad and Mosul. Historian <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Vincent A. Smith\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vincent_A._Smith\">Vincent A. Smith<\/a> says, \u201cIt must be admitted that a personal visit of the Apostle Thomas to South India was easily feasible in the traditional belief that he came by way of <a title=\"Socotra\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Socotra\">Socotra<\/a>, where an ancient Christian settlement undoubtedly existed. I am now satisfied that the Christian church of South India is extremely ancient&#8230;\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Saint Thomas Christians remained as an independent group, and they got their bishops from <a title=\"Church of the East\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Church_of_the_East\">Church of the East<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-Church_of_the_East_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mylakkattufamily.org.in\/Mylakkattu_Family\/#cite_note-Church_of_the_East-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> until the 16th century. <a title=\"Saint Thomas Christians\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Thomas_Christians\">Saint Thomas Christians<\/a> were greatly affected by the arrival of the <a title=\"Portugal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portugal\">Portuguese<\/a> in 1498. The Portuguese attempted to bring the community under the auspices of Latin Rite Catholicism resulting in permanent rifts in the community.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Migration\" class=\"mw-headline\">Migration<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Portugese arrival on the latter century which tried to destroy the inherited syrian christian faith, along with enemity from the other religious rulers made the forefathers to leave from there, Spices trade flourishing in travancore and proximity to the \u201cQueen of Arabian sea\u201d may also be seen as a reason.
